Paving His Path: How Ryan Is Breaking the Mold at AWB Engineers

At AWB Engineers, meaningful careers don't always follow traditional paths. Ryan's journey is one that proves motivation, hands-on experience, and a supportive team can lead to fulfilling success in architecture—even without a conventional degree.

Forging His Way Forward

Ryan made a conscious decision to pursue architecture through a nontraditional route. “There are other ways to become an architect without a degree. If you go through an internship or apprenticeship, that was the route I took.” Instead of enrolling in a four-year program, he focused on building his practical foundations—starting at a local community college to learn drafting basics, then moving straight into hands-on work and beginning the process of earning his architecture license.

His early years were spent absorbing knowledge through hands-on learning. "I just put in the work and asked questions for my first few years, to try to get the basic understanding." That willingness to learn and show up with curiosity laid the groundwork for his career growth.

Practice Makes Perfect

From the moment he started his role, he felt encouraged to grow professionally. "AWB has supported me in anything I needed to pursue my passion of becoming an architect. I came in as an intern here, completed my internship, and then that's when I got the full job as a drafter." The real difference came from the collaborative nature of the team. "The most impactful piece in the learning process here has just been the openness to explain the process and the reasoning for the design.”

Being surrounded by colleagues across multiple disciplines expanded his understanding. "Even if that's not your specialty, since the company is intertwined with all the disciplines under one roof, it helps with your learning aspects."

A Work Culture of Experience

Ryan discovered that being part of an established organization like AWB offered unique opportunities, where the company culture and growth opportunities have made a lasting impact. "I can't see where I would be now without the support and experience I've learned here at AWB. I can't imagine going anywhere else. They are so open, easy to work with, and helpful. I'm incredibly grateful for what they've done for me, what they gave me."

Giving Back to the Next Generation

As his career continues to grow, he now focuses on helping others find their way in the field. "And the one way to pay it forward is to train the future architects for this firm so the company can keep growing." Mentorship has become a natural extension of the learning culture he benefited from—and a way to ensure that AWB continues to thrive.

Building Stronger Futures Together

Ryan's story serves as a prime example of the many ways to build a career in architecture. With the right environment, dedication, and support, anyone with passion and purpose can succeed. At AWB Engineers, we don't just hire employees—we invest in individuals who will shape the future of our industry.
